Ay yi yi, and Now We Have TextPattern

Root had a security issue resulting in a complete wipeout of his database. He wrote about it here, IfElse (Phu) suggested we do some directory housekeeping to prevent the same thing from happening to the rest of us, Podz gave his opinion on the matter here, and it was discussed in the forums here.

So after I did the suggested file removal, I read that Root switched from WordPress to TextPattern, a CMS/blogging software with a little more emphasis on the CMS.

Root’s post on the pros of TextPattern has me considering giving it a try, but the installation procedure scares me off. The last time I mucked about my database Podz had to help me clean up the mess I made.

I do enjoy WordPress but I’m still not able to completely format things the way I want yet; my current blog-style format is what I’ve “settled” for because it’ll be a lot of work to maintain.

For example, I want different styling and information posted for different categories, but I don’t want to create a category page for each category. If I make “universal” changes to one category page I’ll have to go through and change them all. I had this problem with my static HTML website and I was hoping to avoid it with blogging software.

And any time I’ve messed with PHP it’s kicked me right smack in the bohunney. I must be the one exception to peterx’s qualifications to use PHP.

  1. With the type of needs you have TXP is ideal The install is as clean as WP. It does take a bit of time to get the knack of the power it offers but then it rocks. Frankly WP is primitive by comparison.
